Description and Effects
AK-47 is a combination of Colombian (sativa), Mexican (sativa), Thai (sativa), and Afghani (indica) varieties, resulting in a complex blend of effects and flavors. The strain is approximately 65% sativa and 35% indica, and is known for its bright white coloring, high THC content (20%+) and strong scent. Plants are tall and white, and have large calyxes. Buds are dark yellow-green with numerous trichomes and red hairs. CBD and CBN levels can be as high as 1.5%.
Contrary to its name, AK-47 will leave you relaxed and mellow, delivering a "steady and long-lasting cerebral buzz that keeps you mentally alert and engaged in creative or social activities". According to Wikileaf, this strain can result in feelings of laziness, but also increased creativity, euphoria and peace. Some users may feel dizziness, headaches, or paranoia after consumption. It is used to relieve anxiety, chronic aches and pains, and stress, or by those who suffer from bipolar disorder, depression and other mood disorders, or to increase appetite and lessen nausea.
AK-47 is easy to grow and has a short indoor flowering time of just 53 to 63 days. Outdoor plants typically take longer and growers recommend an indoor environment with either soil or hydroponic setups. According to Wikileaf: "Many choose to grow AK-47 indoors in either soil or hydro, but it can be grown outside in a mild climate. Ideally, temperatures should be kept below seventy-five degrees Fahrenheit. If grown at seventy-five degrees, the plants will produce the same yield, but the buds will open and become fluffy. The strain flowers for eight to nine weeks. If grown outdoors, plants are ready for harvest in the middle of October. Under reasonable conditions, AK-47 plants can yield between 350 and 500 grams per square meter."
History and Reception
The strain was created by Serious Seeds in 1992, but may have begun in the post-war 1970s as a Thai and Afghani cross. It underwent a "rework" in 1999 so plants produced uniform seeds. It has won many Cannabis Cup awards around the world for its exceptional THC content. In its list of "10 Cannabis Strains Every Grower Should Try at Least Once", Dinafem Seeds wrote, "AK-47 has won an incredible amount of 12 prizes in several cannabis competitions, making this strain the most awarded cannabis variety in the world. AK-47 has a THC of more than 20%, which makes AK-47 a one-hit-wonder."
AK-47 was included at number ten in "Leafly's Top 10 Cannabis Strains of 2014" and was given honorable mention in High Times magazine's list of the "25 Greatest Strains of All Time". Leafly wrote, "In all her 22 years, AK-47 has risen to the highest ranks, promising effects that walk the line between stimulating euphoria and mellow relaxation. A glance at AK's family tree begins to explain this collage of effects: genetics from Colombia, Thailand, Mexico, and Afghanistan bring together a spectrum of delightful experiences true to AK-47's hybrid classification."
