Tonga, officially the Kingdom of Tonga, is a Polynesian sovereign state and archipelago comprising 176 islands with a surface area of about 750 km2 scattered over 700000 km2 of the southern Pacific Ocean, of which 52 are inhabited by its 103,000 people.[1]

Cannabis Legislation

Cannabis and all activities associated with are illegal in Tonga and even hemp clothing is forbidden and is frowned upon by many in the country. Law enforcement is slack in the country however and police are known to take bribes.[2]

A potential parliamentarian candidate, Semisi 'Ulu'ave Mila has called for the decriminalization of cannabis use and production in Tonga and belives smoking weed should be legal in some cases. Currently, Tongan law carries a maximum prison sentence of 25 years for cannabis possession or a $750,000 pa’anga fine.[3]
